Q: Who is MT Alpha and why should I join? A: We are a women's cycling team of motivated junior girls and women who are focused on cultivating bike skills, confidence, and competition. We support and encourage our members to test their limits and exceed their perceived abilities through races, group rides, clinics, training, and coaching. If you are searching for encouragement to be the best of your ability, if you are willing to test your own limits and capabilities, while proving you are better than you thought (both on and off the bike), we want you to join!
Q: Is MT Alpha accepting new members for 2022? How do I sign up? A: Yes. Starting April 1, 2022 - you can Sign up here.
Q: I don’t mountain bike. Do you have options for road and gravel riders? A: We love our road, gravel, and cyclocross riders. While we don’t officially organize road or gravel group rides in the spring or summer, our members can take advantage of our list-serve to organize their own rides. Come September, many of us change gears for cross season and will meet to pre-ride the race courses or work on skills. We have strong representation at all the Missoula Cyclocross races - juniors, club team, and race team members alike!
Q: What types of memberships are available? A: We offer 3 types of membership: Race Team, Club Team, and Junior Team. Read more about the benefits and requirements for each membership type on our website to figure out which option is best for you!
Q: I’m only looking for a group ride. Why should I pay the membership fee? A: MT Alpha is much more than a group ride. Your dues help us support member sponsorships, as well as our community youth programs such as the MORE programs, the Flagship program and Zootown Derallieurs.
Q: Can juniors join the race team? A: If your daughter is committed to satisfying the race team requirements, is at an age where competition at a high level is appropriate, and we believe she is ready for the race team, then YES! We would love your junior to race. Please contact us so we can discuss this option if your daughter is interested. However, we highly encourage your junior to join our junior team. This is a dedicated program with athlete specific coaching for your girls so they can develop the skills they need to become the type of rider they want to become. Check out our junior page for more information regarding signup dates.
Q: If I join the club team now, but end of doing 6 races and volunteer, can I still get the race team benefits like reimbursement and Momentum? A: Yes - If you join as a club team member, and are wanting to race, we highly encourage it. If you end up meeting the race team requirements, including racing 6 races and volunteering 4x, then let your club team chair know. You can then submit receipts and your volunteer hours. If you meet all requirements, you can then get race team benefits.
Q: What if I can’t do 6 races, should I still join the race team? Will I still get reimbursed if I do fewer than 6 races? A: If you don’t meet race team requirements, you won't get reimbursed for your races.
Q: What If I’m on another team already? Can I still join? A: Yes. However, if you want to be reimbursed for races you still must meet the race team requirements. Only those races done in your MT Alpha kit will be counted as your 6 race minimum; you will only be reimbursed for those races done in your MT Alpha kit. We will NOT reimburse races in which you wear a different team kit.
Q: Do MT Alpha members get discounts at bike shops? A: We do not have a specific bike shop as a sponsor because we want to spread the bike shop love out as much as possible. If you say you’re on Alpha, many shops in town will give you a little love back :)
Q: Are there kits and how do I get one? A: Race and club team members are able to purchase a kit. After you become a member, we will open up a team store and let you know via email when you can purchase a kit. These orders are only available a couple of times per season so you must make your order at those times. If you become a member late in the season, you may not be able to get a kit.
Q: When will group rides start? A: Rides start as soon as trail conditions permit. Our first organized "ride" of the year is a mini clinic on Wednesday, April 28 at 6:15pm. Once the trails are ready, we’ll offer 2 weeknight rides. The race team ride is an advanced, fast-paced, interval ride on Monday nights at 6pm. The club team ride is an intermediate-paced, social, no-drop ride on Wednesday nights at 6:15pm. Club and Race Team members are welcome (and encouraged!) to attend both. The race and club team committee chairs send out weekly emails notifying members of the time and location of each ride. Rides are also posted on the members shared google calendar.
Q. How do I hear about the rides, training, etc? I stopped getting emails from you. A: Only members get race and club team specific emails and access to our shared calendar with all the fun details concerning races, training, group gatherings, etc. If you were a member in 2019, for instance, but did not pay your dues in 2020 then you were dropped from our list. Sign up HEREto become a member and to receive emails from our race and club team committee chairs.
Q: I can’t make the group rides. Are there other ways to get involved? A: Yes! We are always looking for members to get involved with our committees. Read more about them HERE, and sign up HERE.
Q: What other fun activities do you ladies organize? A: Once a summer/fall we organize a race and club team retreat for our members! It's a time for us to bond, ride and relax as a team, learn new skills and push ourselves in a comfortable and fun way. Each year our retreat looks different and is held at different riding locations. It is usually done over a weekend and involves camping, riding, eating and swimming. Sometimes we enlist local professional mountain bikers or coaches to put on a small skills clinic for us. In one word: FUN. We will announce the date and location at the end of May to our members.
